The Castle market in Sheffield is another fine example of Brutalist architecture soon to be demolished! I believe an archaeological team will be excavating to see if they can find any evidence of the castle that was on the site.
An attempt at softening the concrete was made with the large ornate sign at the entrance to the square. The steps seen at the left go up to The Gallery, a collection of smaller shops. Mum used to work in the fabric shop there a couple of days a week.
@crawest Thank you Julie. It is sad it will be lost but something new may be discovered about the castle before re-development. Unfortunately it would cost too much to bring the building up to safety standards. Katharine
