.....continuing our day out we moved on to Housesteads......
Housesteads is higher up on the Pennines and a much bleaker place than Chesters. It was surprising how quickly the landscape changed as we moved along the road, parallel with the wall, the easy way - on the bus!
The foreground ruined walls were part of the military settlement. The Romans were amazing at building defensive positions.
At the back right of the picture you can get the glimpse of one of several lakes in this area, and a path can be seen round the dark trees on the right of the picture leading back to the visitors centre from the ruins.
We were told it was a half mile walk to see the ruins, but as it was almost all up a steep hill from the visitors centre, it felt further, but it was well worth the effort!
We also took the opportunity to walk a short way along the wall before returning for the bus back to Hexham.
@ivan Bleak is the word, and we were there this time on a nice day. Last time it was cold and raining and it felt like we were at the end of the world!

@bkbinthecity Thanks. Its a great place to visit, very varied scenery as you go the width of the country from Newcastle at the East to Solway on Firth at the far West. Awesome to think the Romans built a wall and forts in those locations. Katharine
