Earlier this year the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, celebrated it's centenary. This was one of only a handful of shots taken on my visit to Bradford last Friday.
The Grade II Listed Alhambra Theatre in Morley Street, Bradford was built by Chadwick and Watson in 1914 and was restored to its former grandeur in 1986 after a period of uncertainty when it looked as if it might be demolished and replaced by a car park.
The auditorium was built on three levels, now fully restored, consisting of Stalls, two Balconies, and two boxes on each side with a current total capacity of 1,464.
The stage, now twice the depth of the original and an extended grid of 70 foot is capable of staging the largest of productions.
This theatre is a major touring venue and hosts a wide range of stage shows from ballet and opera to variety and comedy, musicals, drama and, of course, the annual pantomime. Regular visits are made from prestigious companies such as Opera North, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre, Matthew Bourne's New Adventures and the Royal National Theatre to complement spectacular West End musicals such as Grease, Miss Saigon, Whistle Down the Wind and The Phantom of the Opera.
It's already mentioned, but that is what I was going to say.. very impressive building. and btw another familiar name. we also have town call Bradford. it's a place close to the Holland Marsh, so a lot of farms on the outskirts of the town.
Thank you all for your comments and favs, which got this shot onto the trending page. I'm pleased that you agree that this lovely building was well worth preserving.
