Almost a snow scene! by fishers

Almost a snow scene!

Rather than catch a bus directly to Eden Camp, Katharine and I got off in Malton bus station and walked the 1 1/2 miles to Eden Camp along a road lined with history.

Not only was there the priory, now a parish church, but attractive cottages in Old Malton, including one with a thatched roof.

There was also this field of mounds, which is now a public open space known as Orchard Fields, but which was once the site of a Roman settlement. The mounds are some of the earthworks associated with a Roman fort, and a wander around the site is accompanied with a series of interesting and helpful information boards outlining the history and layout of the site.

Sadly, my desire to take snow scenes this winter have been defeated by the lack of snow in York, but at least this shot is almost a snow scene!

I spy the sprinkle of snow. Great framing around the mounds with the tree. We have mounds here in the US, too, Indian (Native Americans) used them for burial sites. Not that I'm an expert. I love seeing these and having something to compare them to. Great photo!

Thank you all for your kind and generous comments, and for the favs, they are all much appreciated. This field of mounds isn't very different to other similar places that I've seen, but somehow this is quite a special place. I find the Roman history quite fascinating - and for those younger and more active, there is an orienteering course on the site!
