OK. it's not actually in their back garden, it's in a large public car park behind the houses, and is being used to replace a railway bridge off the left hand side of this shot which carries trains across the River Ouse from York railway station towards Malton and Scarborough..
Preparation has been going on for some time, with equipment and the new bridge sections being put in the car park, which is currently closed for parking. Each bridge section is 23.8 metres long. The crane weighs 500 tonnes, is over 85 metres tall and can lift a maximum of 60 tonnes
The railway is closed for nine days, and in that time the track and ballast has to be removed, the old bridge sections lifted out, new bridge sections lifted in, ballast and track replaced and the route made safe for trains to run again. Closure started on Saturday 14th Feb and work should be completed on Sunday 22nd Feb. I will be watching progress!
Great shot of this nice huge crane . Love them to see them at work.
Do n`t do it like it was on the news about a week ago. :
A boy in love hire a crane to ask his girlfriend to marry him from a tray on the crane lifted over the houses to the bedroom of the girl on the second floor. Sadly the crane was fixed well and he claps . Two houses where serious damage. ( They told us the girl say :Yes )
Thank you all for the many and varied comments that you have posted - they are very much appreciated! It all seems rather quiet by the river now, with the crane gone and the train service to Scarborough restored.
Ferry, your crane story was both funny and sad - It's lucky that nobody was hurt, and it's nice that the girl said yes!
