Italian Garden, Valley Gardens, Saltburn by the Sea
Ian and I walked up the The Valley Gardens which travel up the ravine of the Skelton Beck The gardens have a number of features including a model railway, woodland centre and these lovely sheltered Italian Gardens.
The Italian Gardens were designed by Joseph Newton for the Saltburn Improvement Company in 1860.The garden is laid out on a terrace consisting of an oval-shaped flower parterre with chain borders of box (replanted and restored 1996). The garden is surrounded by a gravel walk, a shrubbery, decorative cast-iron columns, and seats. In 1868, a year after Newton's design had been implemented, the Italian Garden and its extensive planting scheme was praised and described in the Middlesbro' and Stockton Gazette.
Thank you for your comments anf fav. The Victorians/Edwardians left many wonderful parks which are a joy to the communities they serve. Katharine
Thank you Bob. I enjoyed sitting there out of the wind and enjoying the sunshine. Katharine
