One of the more unusual sights on my walk around the Alfreton area with Lucy earlier this week was an explosives factory. The tower and bank at it's foot are a small part of the site. The footpath that we followed ran around a long section of the perimeter fence of the factory.
The whole hillside is covered in spaced-out buildings within protective bunkers, forming part of the Exchem Rough Close explosives factory. Much of it now looks disused. I have no knowledge of the history of the site, but it might well have had it's origin as a wartime munitions factory. Although we were walking around part of the boundary fence, views into the site were limited. It can be much more clearly seen from the trains heading north from Alfreton railway station.
Thank you all for your comments and favs - nice to hear from you all!
Although this was a large industrial site it was quite well hidden, and there were few vantage points to get a shot of it.
Padlock, we seem to be retracing your past recently - first Yarm and now Alfreton!
