North Bar, Beverley by fishers

North Bar, Beverley

This is the shot I had intended to post yesterday following my first visit to Beverley for six years, before I was distracted by the moth. Beverley is a market town and the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire, and has a fascinating history and some lovely architecture.

This shot shows North Bar and some of the buildings surrounding it. North Bar itself dates from 1410 and was built in brick. It was part of the town's defences, which consisted of a ditch and earth banks, which failed to protect the city adequately against rebels in 1537, and again during the civil war (1640's) when Royalists took the town from the Parliamentarians.

Today, this part of the road (North Bar Within) is relatively quiet, with traffic diverted away from the town centre. Small pleasant streets make it a fascinating place to explore.

A great view and capture of those beautiful buildings. Fav.
Did they also used black tar to paint the barns ? ( It`s now forbidden in our country to use it.)

Beverley is one of the few places in Yorkshire that I haven't visited... I see from your photo that I have missed a treat.

Well captured. So much character in those old buildings--especially that middle one.

Love these old city gates. They are a very important part of the town/city history. This is a beautiful shot. Pity the building on the right is painted white and not left in red brick colour.

Thank you all for your comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

It was interesting to be back in Beverley after a six year absence - little appears to have changed, and there are fascnating things and places to see. I'll share a few more of them over the next few days.

In which part of Yorkshire were you born Margo? - it might be somewhere that I can get photos of.

I was born in Sheffield. My parents, elder brother and I moved to the Isle of Man when I was a babe of 8 months. My younger brother still lives there. More interesting though is that my maternal grandmother was from Eyam.

That's interesting Margo - Katharine's dad lives in Sheffield, and my mum lives just north of Rotherham, so we are regular visitors to South Yorkshire. We are also great fans of the Isle of Man, having spent many holidays there over the years, although unfortunately not recently - it is somewhere I'd love to visit again. I know of Eyam, although I've never been there, although much of my early walking was done in Derbyshire. I grew up in and around Rotherham before moving to York as a student, and having fallen in love with the place I've lived here ever since.
