One Year Ago....in Rawcliffe, north of York

We weren't posting photos over the Christmas period a year ago, although our cameras were busy, so we missed sharing with you the serious flooding in York that started on 26th December 2015.

The floods began in a small way, with this minor road covered by water from a little beck which flows into the River Ouse. Water didn't enter any of the houses, which are on a small rise from the beck, although the residents had difficulty leaving their homes.

At this stage the floods seemed relatively minor, but worse was to come in other parts of the city in the days that followed........

This shot tells a story of overwhelming amounts of water that can flood and destroy. The homeowners were fortunate.

It must've stopped just in time. Rain here as well which will wash away the last snow.

Oh dear this must have been so scary for the owners of the houses.

I remember seeing it on the news .. very lucky the houses are on a bit of a rise.. though pretty scary..

Wow - glad it's not this year

Yes I remember it well. I understand that some people are still not back in their houses yet?

I'm just relieved you're not suffering the same this Christmas.

An impressive image to capture the extent of the flood.

I recall that there were numerous floods in the UK and US last year.

Thank you for posting this, Ian. It made me stop and recognise how fortunate I am to have not yet exprienced this type of heartbreak. It's so easy to 'forget' and/or 'ignore' when we're not suffering from the desolation, discomfort and distress that accompany flooding...and other natural disasters.

The houses are too dangerously close to the water for comfort. Well captured.

Great look back

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

The floods shown here were as bad as it got in this part of York, fortunately for the residents here, although much worse was to happen in other parts of the city.

This looks a little too close for comfort for those who live in these properties. Good shot.

@lhart

Thank you Lynne - the residents here were fortunate on this occasion, but during the record floods of 2000 quite a few houses in this area (including those shown here) were flooded,
