York Residents Festival - the Council Chamber by fishers

York Residents Festival - the Council Chamber

This weekend has been very busy indeed - it was the annual York Residents Festival, where locals are given free admission to many of the amenities and museums in the city. So, a carefully planned list of places for Katharine and I to visit. We put the emphasis on places that we have not visited before.

This shot shows the interior of the Council Chamber, in part of the Guildhall complex. We were fortunate to be able to take part in this guided tour of the complex, which was the last to take place before redevelopment of the building.

The woman with the pink hair, and her husband, have been running tours here for a considerable time. They were advertised through their Facebook page 'York Past & Present', and this is the first chance I've had to do one of the tours. It was a fascinating behind the scenes look at the building, and there were interesting explanations of what we saw, and about the history of the place.

I love the panelling on the walls - you just don't expect to see someone with pink hair somehow! But everyone looks enthralled with what she is saying.

We have something similar in France. On the first Sunday of every month museums, galleries etc. have free admission. EXcellent initiative and introduces families to oeuvres to which they might not otherwise have access.j

I thought the pink-haired lady was a mannequin in a display of how the old council chamber looked like. Once we visited a Jury hall in Inverary, Scotland and we could sit in the court room alongside mannequins. A beautiful council hall and shot and I liked the story. Museums here used to be open on the first Sunday of the month but I don't know if this is still on.

Thank you all for your comments and favs, they are really appreciated.

York Residents Festival has become a must-do each year for Katharine and I, and it was pleasing to find that there were places to see that we hadn't visited before.

By the way, I can recommend the York Past & Present Facebook page, and there is also a York Past & Present website.
