Modern History

While taking photos of the vintage steam locomotive on Thursday, I noticed this electric locomotive arrive at platform 6 on a service from London.

It is one of 31 identical locomotives built between 1988 and 1990 for services between London, Yorkshire and Scotland when the route was first electrified.

Following privatisation of Britain's railways, these locomotives have carried a variety of liveries of the various franchise operators who have run services along the route. These locomotives are in the process of being replaced by a fleet of Hitachi designed trains, and to mark their end this locomotive has been repainted in its original colour scheme. It stands waiting to operate the 1202 service to London.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

Since 1990, I've travelled many thousands of miles on trains powered by these locomotives, and until recently they were a key link when visiting both of our daughters. A small number will continue in use for another two years until further new trains are built for this route.
