This shot continues our look at the Church of the Holy Redeemer, and shows two of the ancient carved stones incorporated into the church.
The stone on the left has interlaced decoration and was probably part of a cross created on behalf of a wealthy Viking in the 10th century. Today it can be found at the end of the arcade, near the sanctuary area.
The stone on the right is one of a number of carved crosses that were burial markers of later medieval date, perhaps of the 13th or 14th century. Today it can be found in the entrance hall to the church.
It is a fascinating 'treasure hunt' to find these wonderful old pieces of carved stone.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I love the fact that the stone carvers of hundreds of years ago have left artifacts which still tell us something of their skills and beliefs.
