Another display of Christmas lights along Stonegate, York. The illuminated cross in the distance is on scaffolding on the south side of York Minster, where there is a major project to restore the stained glass windows.
Stonegate follows the route of one of the main Roman roads in the ancient city, from almost 2000 years ago, the Via Praetoria, which ran from the south-west gate of the Roman city to the Roman headquarters building.
There are buildings of many ages along the street - the oldest are fragments of a Norman house, dating back almost 1000 years. Many of the buildings are listed buildings, and it's a very popular street for tourists to visit.
I should add that this shot and the one posted yesterday were taken at the end of lockdown 2, hence the reason for the lack of people. I was not breaking the rules - this was my daily allowed exercise.
We did so much of our courting around Stonegate! Used to meet at Taylor's Tearooms, which is now "Little Bettys" of course. The first time we held hands was on Stonegate. Aye me, you have stirred some memories with this shot!
I'm pleased to have brought back such positive memories for you! If there are other places that would bring back memories, let me know and I will see if I can get photos to share.
Thanks for the interresting history.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Stonegate is a very pleasant street, with lots of varied and interesting architecture and quite a few unusual shops.

Thank you Nina - I love discovering more of the history of York - and other places that I visit (or used to visit before Covid-19)

Thank you Bri - it's been fascinating in the city centre without so many people around - much better photo opportunities!
