Classic Car

Every trip to a museum is a voyage of discovery, and my visit to the Danum Museum in Doncaster was no exception.

The transport gallery is predominantly railway memorabelia, but tucked away behind two steam locomotives was this classic car.

Although I was aware that many towns and cities had car manufacturing plants in the early days of motoring, I had assumed that by the 1950s most car building was much more centralised, but I discovered that Doncaster still had a car plant then, and that this type of car was built there.

The information with the car reads: 'The Ford Popular was the most famous mass-produced car to be made in Doncaster. Advertised as the world’s cheapest saloon car (at £275), the Ford Popular was launched in 1953 and made in Doncaster from 1955 until 1964 as well as at other Ford plants. By the time the Ford Motor Company's works at Carr Hill closed, 155,000 Ford Populars had rolled off the production line. Thames Vans and Ford Anglias were also made here. Most of the cars were for export to America and sales totalled over $5 million. In its heyday Ford’s Carr Hill factory employed over 1,500 people.'

So that was probably my most surprising discovery on this museum visit.

Beautiful shot of this classic car. I remember them on the road when I was young. Those cars could live forever compared to the flashy cars they build today.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

It is quite surprising how much smaller this car is when compared with a modern family car - no wonder our roads are so crowded, with so many more cars now, and how much bigger they are!

@ninaganci

Hello Nina, I presume your question relates to perspective. A photo taken close to a vehicle will tend to make the vehicle appear longer, thinner and stretched, so the result tends to look better when the photo is taken from further away. Taking a 3/4 view like this gives the shot depth. In this case I had no alternative but to take a close photo due to the cramped location where the car was displayed, and then I cheated by using software to stretch the rear of the car downwards to increase it's relative size. I hope that helps. If you have more specific questions please feel free to ask.
