One of the fairly time consuming tasks that I carried out was to scan lots of black and white photos from my mum. I was quite surprised how many my brother and I found while clearing out her house, following her death in 2021. Quite a few were in poor condition, but I tried to recover what I could from them. It turned out to be quite a learning experience!
This shot appears to be of my grandma when she was a young woman, looking after a group of children. These children don't look like her children, based on what I've seen in other photos. I believe that before her marriage she was employed by a wealthy family to look after their children so that is probably who these children are.
I thought the sailor suits the boys were wearing would give an idea of the date of this shot, but it seems they were popular from around 1850 to the 1930s, so not much help there. From what little other information I have about my grandma, I would think this dates from shortly before the First World War, so around 110 years ago.
I like the traditionl seaside play, with the children having created a sand island, in much the same way that can still be seen today.
What a lovely old photo. I scanned lots of photos when we cleared my Mum's house many years ago and I finally got round to editing them in Photoshop and putting them all into a photobook during lockdown. You will have fun tidying them all up.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
It has been a fascinating experience going through and scanning all these photos (several hundred of them), and more recently editing them and trying to sort them into some sort of chronology. I've learned a lot about both photo editing and my family. Sadly very few of the photos have any information with them, so they have also brought up a lot of questions.
@fishers When I research someone's geneaolgy I always stress the importance of labelling old photos and documents. I have some old family pictures and there's no one left to tell me who they are. Really enjoying your old images.
Thank you Cherrill. It has been really rewarding scanning and studying these images. Sadly there is no systematic recording of the story of each image. Some that came from an uncle have a date and a location, but little else. It is interesting to try and discover more about them though. The mysteries revealed have made me even more thorough in documenting my digital images, and the years of transparencies before that.
( Have done this also with the ones I`ve.)

Thank you Nina. I think it gives an interesting glimpse of life in the early 20th century.

Thank you Paul. If only I knew more background info.
