There might have been something of a shortage of steam locomotives for me to see and photograph at York railway station this year so far, but steam locomotives have not been forgotten. This yarnbombing is a post box topper to commemorate the centenary of the building of 'Flying Scotsman', possibly one of the most famous steam locomotives in the world.
'Flying Scotsman' was the first steam locomotive to be scientifically recorded as exceeding 100 mph (161 kmph) in 1934. The record was soon broken, but it ensured 'Flying Scotsman' a place in railway history.
It worked express services on the East Coast main line between London, Yorkshire and Scotland until January 1963, when it was sold into preservation. Three private owners have owned it since then, before a massive fundraising effort resulted in it being bought for the national collection in 2004 and has since been in the care of the National Railway Museum in York. Since then it has undergone a most thorough overhaul, and is probably in better condition now than it has been since it was first built.
Amongst other activities since first sold into preservation, it has travelled to the USA and steamed across the country. It has also been to Australia and travelled extensively there.
To mark the centenary this year there are events throughout Britain, and opportunities to see it work on both the main line and on a number of preserved railways.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Yarnbombing is becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Katharine and I went to Thirsk yesterday to see their Coronation display, and discovered that there is a first display in Easingwold, also for the Coronation, so we called there on our bus journey back from Thirsk to York and took some photos.
I've a suspicion your dream of driving Mallard might be a challenge, since Mallard needs a major (and therefore very expensive) overhaul before it can run again, and at the moment the museum authorities seem very reluctant to restore anything to working order following the huge cost of restoring Flying Scotsman.
I thought you might like this one! I haven't caught up with Flying Scotsman for photos this year yet. Its movements away from the railway museum tend to have taken place far too early in the morning for me!

( As a steam lover I knew the story of this famous train)
