This sight is ugly to me because those patches mean this tree is on its way out and not just out of the picture. I think it's an ash and this is what happens when the ash borer beetle works its killing magic. Whatever is wrong with it and whatever kind of tree it is, I do know that when the chips of bark start accumulating around the base of the tree (woodpeckers chipping?), the tree will die in the next year or so. While there is nothing inherently ugly about this scene, its meaning is ugly to me.
Taken as part of get-pushed challenge from Monique "I think I would like to see you take the natural beauty that surrounds you and show us it's less pretty side."
Fabulous capture. And as a writer, I love your qualification of ugly here.
Perhaps we should remember that when the tree falls, it will become refuge for smaller wildlife and compost for future growth. Mother Nature knows what she's doing. We should stop getting in Her way.
I know how you feel! We have a couple in our yard that for one reason or another have not survived (probably gypsy moth destruction) but rather than cut them down right away, we've left them to the woodpeckers for a while. It's sad to see them go, but also fun to see who visits them each day for a snack. Nice shot.
