It was fun to watch all the colorful outrigger boats come in at the end of their race. It was the 60th anniversary of the Catalina Crossing.
The first outrigger race was held in California on September 20, 1959. The first race was a long distance race from Avalon on Catalina Island to Newport Dunes on the California coast...the original California Outrigger Classic.
It is now a two day race event with races between Catalina Island and Newport Beach. The women raced first to Catalina from Newport, over 26 miles. The next day, the men paddle on a 30 miles course back to Newport. Each team has nine members and there were over 100 outriggers in the race.
Lucky for us we got a great table on the patio at the Bluewater Avalon restaurant and had a front row seat. Love the bird in the foreground and the Catalina Casino in the background.
Special tents selling merchandise were set up on the plaza and additional tents for the teams. It was a very crowded day and full of music, bubbles, tired athletes and their families.
Posting early as we are watching our 3 grand boys for the weekend...busy, busy! Also don't forget the mfpiac88 challenge ends on Sunday, September 22. :)
Colourful and buoyant, wonderful! I like the different layers: the backmost building, the boats in background and in the middle and the bird in foreground. This gives your shot a lot of depth.
