The eyes of a dragonfly are incredibly advanced. Most insects have multifaceted eyes that give them a panoramic view of their surroundings. It's the reason their eyes look like honeycombs up close. House flies have about 6,000 eye facets...dragonflies have 30,000 individual facets. Each facet creates its own image and the dragonfly brain has eight pairs of visual neurons to compile those thousands of images into one picture. Truly amazing eyes! I didn't get close enough with this macro capture to adequately show the 'honeycomb' characteristics of the facets...that will be my goal for the next dragonfly capture.
This is quite astonishing. The dragonfly is so clear and you are showing all of it's interesting features - the delicate wings that always remind me of stained glass windows, and the backlighting on the hairs, those tiny hairs on the face and the wonderfully brignt background all make this such a great capture and a big favourite for me.
