Worldwide Minute 2017 by gaylewood

Worldwide Minute 2017

This is my first time to participate in the Worldwide Minute. At 5:47 p.m. I was on the banks of the Cibolo Creek in Boerne, Texas taking photos of geese and ducks. Boerne is about 20 minutes from where I live in San Antonio.
Nicely captured

I called the church (United Methodist Church in Hamilton) and was told that the area once had a large African American population, and the cemetery had been neglected, fallen into disrepair, and forgotten. The concrete slab with all the headstones on it was built about 30 years ago because many of the headstones had toppled over, and they couldn't tell where exactly they belonged. So all those headstones are on the slab in memory of the deceased they belong to, and as a way to honor them.

@skstein Thank you so much for the follow-up information on your photo! That was a wonderful way for them to honor the deceased...I'm sure their families appreciated it tremendously.

Sadly, after I posted what the church told me, a friend found the true story on a historical blog about slavery in the area, and it is very much uglier. If you are interested, you can read about it here -- https://historicwanderings.blogspot.com/2012/11/harmony-united-methodist-church.html
