Pileated Woodpecker by gaylewood

Pileated Woodpecker

I was happy to spot this big, dashing woodpecker with the flaming crest in one of our backyard trees this evening. These woodpeckers leave rectangular holes in dead trees after probing deep into the rotten wood in search of insects.
A great find and capture.

Sometimes I think these birds are stupid. Why waste so much energy to look for their food when they can find grub to eat all over the garden? You got a fabulous capture of this one.

I would so love to see (and photograph) one of these impressive woodpeckers up THIS close! I sometimes hear them when hiking at a local state park but rarely get to see them through the dense foliage. Great image you've captured here.
