. . . taking a break. It's hummingbird mating season here and this is the first time I've been able to observe their mating behavior. I haven't been able to get any shots of their actual mating ritual but I'll certainly keep trying for a photo. I did check online for interesting info on the subject.
During a brief courtship, the male does a back-and-forth display flight over the female. The noisy and rapid U-shaped flight is meant to show the female his aerobatic skills and strength. Sometimes the pair will do an up-and-down flight together. After mating takes place, the female assumes all parental duties. Hummingbirds do not mate for life and don't stay together as a pair. After mating, the male leaves the female and mates with another female and the cycle goes on.
They are so sweet. You can certainly see the blur of his wings. Well done. We have not had any hummers at our new home. It appears there are not enough trees for them to stay in, so they pass us by.
This is an awesome close-up of one of my fav subjects ...Hummingbirds are wonderful to watch! I enjoyed reading your narrative, also - Quite interesting.
