We have had a glorious week of weather and Merri Island looked great this day :) This is the island where the penguins and the 2 Maremma dogs who guard them live. It is now closed to the public but with the very low tides you can walk over to it easily. The walkway on the island is locked though.
# Thanks for all the great comments lately. I read and appreciate them all. I have been in Melbourne again, so will be playing catch up with your photos. My point & shoot camera I took with me wouldn't work, so I'm using some shots from last week. Thanks :)
Must be lovely to explore the island. We can walk over to Fingal Island when the sand bar is high, but it is dangerous most of the year and a few people have drowned in the past when they misjudge the tides.
@shirleybankfarm@onewing@merrelyn@julzmaioro@chard Thanks for all your great comments. The island is closed from October to April while the Maremmma dogs are there. They are taken off over the cold months. We were able to go to the island and the walkway was built in 2002 (which I was a part of!) to keep people off most of the area to protect the burrows. But sadly some people drowned nearby in wild weather so the council prohibited access to both islands. However it is hard to monitor when we have such low tides like now. but the walkway is closed as the dogs live on it. The penguin population is growing every year :) @desertaura You have a great imagination :) @pasttheirprime Thanks. I have used the island, or parts of it for sunset shots, so will do a full island in the next colourful sunset :)
Love the reflections, great shot.
