Gen. Lee Contemplates Retreat at Antietam

The Battle of Antietam in Sept. 1862 is for many reasons, considered by most historians to be the most pivotal battle in the American Civil War (which ended in April 1865.) For one thing, it was the 1st major battle on Union (northern) soil. General Robert E. Lee (commander of the Confederate forces) surprisingly held the ground against an army that dramatically outnumbered him. In the end however, he chose to withdraw, seeing that he had lost his tactical advantage.

@carolmw Thank you Carol............I took numerous "head-shots" that day from a long ways off, using my killer zoom. I like them because they are very natural; no one knew they were being photographed. Ta Ta for now, Les x
