I remember you taking this shot! i got one too! I just looked it up...here is what I found so far. These are mites ..parasites on the Harvestman (technically, these are not spiders... because they don't have the two body segments arachnids have) Here is the text...I did not put the whole link as you have scroll down through all the bug pics this man has taken...
One of my two specimens of Leiobunum vittatum pictured also has another feature- mites! It turns out that there are specific species of Erythraeidae mites whose larvae parasitize harvestmen. The larvae bite a hole in the tough outer layer and insert a tubular stylostome through which they suck out body fluids. You can see them dangling from the legs by their stylostome. And I thought chiggers were bad!
I also read that these guys lose legs very easily...and then there is a thing in the leg that keeps the leg twitching....it "entertains the predator" while the spider is escaping! Pretty cool!
@grammyn sent you an email about that Hooch painting..the one where it was the version with only one man, but there were two men in the other version. I can only find the "Two man" version online..so far. So we saw a rare one I guess..with the one guy.
Daniel posted a pic of a danselfly with some orange spheres he thought could be eggs. So that reminded me of what we learned on our photo walk about these harvestmen. Check out this super close up macro of these mites on a damselfly...found it online. http://www.flickr.com/photos/24085570@N04/4397149696/
