I could not believe my luck on the way home! I spotted this guy on the side of the road in a ditch, near a bridge. I managed to turn around, almost got my car stuck, as it has been raining. Turned around again and parked on the edge of the road, in a high traffic area. Took several shots out the car window. I think he must be lost to be in the DFW area, so far from the coast.
Here is a link to a web site with info on this bird: http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/detail.asp?recNum=BD0116

@lasco@lyno Thank you! I just posted a shot in my Extras album of where I found him, if you would like to see it. I put the link under the photo in my main album.
@marlboromaam It was definately a "drive-by shooting"! I had my flashers on and was afraid someone was going to hit me, but I just had to get that shot! A warehouse was changing shifts down the road and that is where a lot of the cars were coming from (behind me).
Gorgeous and stunning capture!! Love his colors and textures. I can identify with your "stopping in high traffic areas!" Amazing what we all do for a photo, isn't it. :)
@esox Thanks! @karenann Thanks! I almost stopped on a large bridge tonight to snap a sunset shot with two sailboats in it, but my fear would not let me!
@yonnie Thank you and thanks for the fav! @humphreyhippo Thank you! True story, I brake for birds or whatever catches my eye that might make an interesting shot. @tonygig Thank you, Tony! And thanks for the FAV!
@pyrrhula@glb484@pointnshoot28@maggiemae@vernabeth Thank you all for your kind comments. I had never seen one of these before, but knew it must be some kind of heron. I used Google to find out what kind it is.
This is simply beautiful: a beautiful bird and a beautiful photo. And it looks like he has his breeding plumage as well. Lucky you! And well done for all your efforts, Linda.
