Old cow trough. by happypat

Old cow trough.

I have a birthday coming up in the next three weeks & I am quite tempted to ask for money towards a new camera but as I haven't quite mastered the one I have yet I thought I would have a practice in manual mode.
I have taken lots of shots this afternoon & all in manual mode & I am quite pleased with the result although no good at any DOF yet the photo isn't too bad.
This is SOOC except for frame.

These flowers are in an old cow feeding trough.

A very Happy 4th July to all our USA commenters.
Lovely selection of plants Pat and lovely shot...should be getting my new camera soon, this one is fully automatic, no fun at all!! so i will be joining you in practice soon, hopefully!!! This one looks great! :)

@fannyb Well mine has all the manual modes etc & RAW but I fancy a Cannon DLSR but do like the compactness of the one I have now so we shall see !! Look forward to seeing your results eventually Fanny!

Wonderful shot Pat, love your plant selection and POV!!

They are loving the old trough by the looks of it Pat! You have got a pretty shallow DOF - the window is out of focus and the front flower. That astrantia is just lovely.

Oh, this is beautiful. I have no idea re how to get dof with manual focus!
July 4th, 2012
Well it's your birthday, and you can ask for one if you want to LOL. Go for it.

We haven't got these flowers, astrantia, in the states. They are lovely, and you've done a great job capturing them, Pat! I like your choice of frame, really brings out the pinks.

Well done with the manual settings, Pat! Wine or no wine, this looks fabulous. A perfectly charming composition! Love how you converted the old trough into such an amazing flower box...such beautiful color and flower combinations. Beautiful!!
July 5th, 2012
This is really pretty. And well done on using the manual settings. I should follow your example!

A very pretty cow trough

nice trough Pat, is it OK to comment on cameras and manual settings....I think we can all get too hung up on equipment...remember that camera manufacturers spend millions of dollars / yens / pounds on R&D.....so in most cases let your camera do the work, it normally gets it right.

With aperture priority , shutter priority, ISO setting, White Balance, +-EV , manual and auto focus, there's not many lighting conditions where the camera cannot cope and you are left with very few times when you want to shoot manual exposures !!

I never use manual exposures ...the only manuals I do are the manuals that came with the camera and manual focussing :)

great job! and good for using manual...this looks great to me!

Pat this is gorgeous - what a beautiful English country garden. I hope you get your birthday wish and score a new camera. I've just got my little point and shoot - and I'm very ignorant of the clever things you guys do with your cameras. Whatever you have done with this one, I like.

@phil_howcroft Thank Phil, I am quite happy to use auto mode the whole time really but feel I should be progressing to more technical stuff when in reality I only have a vague idea what I am doing, LOL! Glad to hear your comments, makes me feel better!
@murnane Same here Marg but always think I will get the time to produce wonderful macro & DOF shots when in reality my favourite photos are of people & streets!
