I packed sandwiches & a flask of coffee & off we went for a ride out trying to keep away from the Bank Holiday traffic.
The Trough of Bowland is a wonderful area of wild moors & a stone farmhouses dotted about among the sheep.
Abbeystead estate is over 22 thousand acres of fells & grouse moors including Abbeystead village itself & many farms & houses all rented out to tenants.
The Duke of Westminster, one of the richest men in England owns all of it & is regularly in residence with his family. The Queen is quite a regular visitor.
The estate is kept in such immaculate condition...there were miles & miles of new young hedge plantings plus lots of pheasants & wild life.
The garden is open once a year for charity.
Three good things:
1. So lucky to live half an hour away from this beautiful countryside.
2. Birdsong......the birds are so happy with the warmer weather.
3. A picnic tastes so much nicer outdoors!
Nice to see you back in your own home environment and sharing all these Lancashire views with us ! The weather improved greatly here too -- lovely warm sunshine We spent some time in the garden and Gary mowed all the lawns . Glad you enjoyed you outing and your picnic !
@newbank Thanks Ruth....picnic are fun although we had to sit in the car like a typical pair of old pensioners....Harry wanted to sit on the wall but it was too cold.
@beryl Good to get a few garden jobs done Beryl....I was all for having a walk somewhere but Harrys knee isn't up,to,it so I drove just over 100 miles as far as Ingleton in North Yorkshire & back through the Trough.
Good to see that glorious tree planting over there where the big house is! The English did it there and did it here too! The wide open spaces - lovely to actually have them!
