Starlings in flight by happypat

Starlings in flight

I walked down the fields with the intention of taking a few muddy field photos & was lucky enough to catch the starlings during their evening settling flights. Two groups flying but I couldn't seem to manage to catch them together in front of me.
The noise was tremendous!
More rain last night had the St Michaels road closed again but no water in houses as far as I know. We came through deep floods to get home after our night out.

Thank you all so much for your lovely comments on our little grandsons second birthday, much appreciated!

Will comment later on as we are off soon to sing carols by candlelight & hot pot supper afterwards.

Three good things:
1. Listening to Chris Hadfield the Canadian space astronaut on Desert Island Discs. One of the most interesting guests have heard!
2. Sellotape dispensers.
3. Winter walks.
Fantastic shot Pat. I've never been lucky enough to see this phenomenon.

It's no good I've tried counting them but I'm sure they keep moving. Lovely capture, isn't this called a murmuration.

A super capture

@ladymagpie a murmuration, it could be but my word there was no murmuring, the noise was amazing! I think this is quite a small group & I have seen pictures of large masses swirling & swooping.....it was good to see this little group.

@susiemc I saw them last week but completely forgot about them today so was pleased to hear them first as they were on the field then all of a sudden up they went.

Its hard to get a focus on something so small and so high! Not sure what the right settings would be! Just the fact of seeing them all here is good - and I can imagine the noise. I love winter walks too! You don't get hot!

Thanks for the news about Chris Hatfield being on Desert Island Discs - I'm a big fan and didn't realise he was going to be on! I bet he was great to listen to, he's a really enthusiastic with a lot of drive to inspire young children.

@happypat I'm downloading it now :) I imagine he may have mentioned this event, but he was the first person to record a music video in space - here's his cover of a Bowie classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaOC9danxNo
Looking forward to seeing you and Grandad

Are you getting as sick of rain as I am? A local woman died when land slide buried her in her house night before last. Sobering! Great catch of this murmuration

amazing sight. When we first saw them whilst visiting Rome we had no idea what they were. Never see it here.

@jgpittenger Sooo much rain Jane & it's so heavy too! Fine this morning so far on this our shortest day.

We used to have great murmurations at the science park that I liked to watch while I queued to get off the site - but I associate them with summer evenings for some reason. I wonder what happened to them all... I think I should introduce the hotpot supper to the south....

Great capture Pat. They are so noisy and unmistakable when they get together. So sorry about your floods again. Those poor people in Cumbria who are flooded for the second and third time. I gather there is more heavy rain forecast over Christmas as well. The weather has gone mad.

@judithg You dont have hotpot supper? Well you are completely deprived! Mind you I am not that keen on hotpot myself, rather have a good steak but it's a great way of feeding lots of people & the gathering is the thing! You will have to educate Judith!
