1916 -2016 Battle of the Somme

My little tribute to those brave men killed one hundred years ago today.

Good to remember that so many gave their lives so we could be free.

Taken in St. Michaels church yard.

Three good things:
1. A phone call from a person wanting to know if I would like to appear on Four in a Bed....over my dead body!!
2. Five ladies back for the weekend, they come every year for a knees up & get together. Lots of laughing!
3. Interesting tennis match between Kyrgios & Brown, what a characterful pair!
It's a lovely shot. The cornflowers and other wild flowers are so poignant.
Now I shall show my ignorance and say what's four in a bed?!

@quietpurplehaze Four in a Bed is a programme on Channel 4 where four couples who run B&B's compete for the title of best b&b. They each visit each other's establishments looking for cleanliness, decor, breakfasts & generally criticise as much as they like. At the end they pay what the think the nights stay is worth & the one with most points wins! A nightmare I have no wish to participate in! It can get quite brutal!

What a well kept graveyard. A credit to the village! I love the way they've brought the splash of colour - and a sign of hope - with the wild flowers.

Lovely shot and tribute. We get 4 in a bed here I thought of you the other night and wondered if you have ever been approached.. don't think I would do it either.. they do get brutal... though you would get perfect 10's.

@julzmaioro Ah thanks Julz, I would have to check there were no cobwebs on the beams, would be my downfall!

A beautiful tribute Pat -- a beautiful and neatly kept churchyard , with that area of delightful wild flowers - cornflowers to commemorate the French and the poppies to commemorate the British ,amongst the buttercups and clovers but to name a few !

A lovely tribute!! I have been quite touched today by some of the services they have had all round the country and in France. You just cannot get your head round so many men killed!! A generation of young men lost.
Lions led by donkeys!!

Love this - the colours are so gentle and fresh. It's been a moving day seeing all the memorial things taking place. We have so much shared history and so good to remember the cost of our peace.

I love the softness of this. A very thought provoking day. The TV coverage has been outstanding. The haunting tone of the whistle ...

Where do you live Pat. Is your B&B dog friendly? Would be nice to come and stay.

Lovely shot and a great tribute. David's Dad was at the Battle of the Somme, he survived. He left for war as a Catholic and came home an atheist. He said he couldn't believe how a God could put people through such hell.

@onewing You you wouldn't blame him would you! Probably more prayers said there though than anywhere under the breath!

@shepherdmanswife We live in Lancashire eight miles inland from Blackpool. We never have taken dogs before except if they sleep in the car because it was a working farm & have simply kept mostly to that rule although a small dog in its own pen would be acceptable. Sorry if that sounds unfriendly but I know there are some really well behaved dogs then there are the testa, I'm sure yours are the former! Yo

I like this idea of putting wild flowers in a fenced plot in a graveyard! Nature is what its all about....and nurturing the memories!
