We used to have five banks in Garstang, no we are down to two. Everywhere they are closing banks, some small towns & villages have no banks at all.
The banks tell us there is not enough custom to warrant staffing them as everyone is going online for their banking. That might be partly true but we still like & need a proper place to get money out & put money in.
In the last six months this mobile bank has taken advantage of the situation & seems to be quite busy.
Three good things:
1. I switched to Nationwide which is open everyday & Saturday mornings too!
2. First casserole of the autumn for our evening meal.
3. Life's too short to persevere with a less than riveting library book, cast it aside & start a better one!
Same situation here; there's a cash dispenser in the nearby village and that's it!
I just started a brand new library book ( more than 700 pages)by Elisabeth George: 'The Punishment She Deserves'. Situated in Shropshire.
@gijsje Ooh same thing happening in Netherlands too then Bep! Actually it's bound to happen as banks are a global thing so they will shutt banks all over but I had never thought of that angle before! I will check your book out!
Such a lovely shot Pat - So sad to see the demise of Banks and Building Societies in our towns . Since I was 18 and left home to go to Uni I had been with the same bank ( different branches ! ) until about 3 yrs ago when we no longer had a branch in Wellington - so for convenience I changed Banks and found it done without problems !
What a great idea - not seen here! They would have to be very secure and hoping not to be robbed. I agree with your number 3. Give it 3 more pages as a chance, if not any better, put it aside!
@beryl Well I don't reckon on traveling into Preston to do a bit of banking so I'm happy with my new system, they are very convenient plus I got £100 for moving over shared with one of my b&bs who recommended me! Win all round!
@maggiemae You seem to be ok fir banks in NZ though I think I've only seen AMZ & one other which I can't remember but one in every town. Probably more independent away from the international named banks.
Oh my that is interesting. Do you have ATM’s? You can get cash from them and on many you can make deposits too. I guess the technology part of banking is making it unnecessary to even go to a bank these days. Hmmm.
A thing of the future I am sure. Not too bad here yet though, we still have banks. I guess fewer people are actually carrying cash around. A young girl in front of me in the supermarket used her credit card to pay for an item she bought costing $4. How sad that she didn't have $4 in cash.
It really is too bad that we are losing service from actual people to faceless machines!
Same thing happening here. We are our own worst enemies though (more the younger generation than us older folks).
If we do everything on line, there is no work for actual people and they will close the branches - which forces us to go online.
Well to Lloyd's for providing a mobile service. Yes we use Nationwide too, as it's non-profit making, has helpful staff and has the best deal on credit/debit transactions when abroad
@farmreporter They tell us there is no call for actual banks these days but I think it's all nonsense, it's a money saving exercise! We are being forced to using on line but many old people do t want to do that, it's a sad state of affairs! @onewing@busylady@brennieb@casablanca
@happypat My mum in law doesn't even own a computer or a smartphone.....it's a fallacy to assume everyone does. I like a real counter with real people too.
@casablanca Our main bank is in Preston, it's the nearest one now that ours has closed in Garstang. We went in recently , a massive downstairs are with various wall machines to put money in etc etc. A few people standing around but you had to go up a massive escolater to get to the counter with real life people. It was tucked away in the corner & a big queue! Does that nor tell them anything! It's all profit margins for shareholders & salaries for top staff!
@happypat Craziness! One wonders if they are working towards the eradication of cash ultimately with the world becoming a plastic one instead. I find I have friends who never.....and I mean never.......carry cash at all! I find that insane, but maybe I am becoming the minority. I hope not!!
