Harry & I went a ride out this afternoon looking at porches.
The architect sent the plans for our alterations to our new place & has added a porch. We didn’t actually discuss a porch so we were surprised.
Thought we had better check them out...Harry hated the look of it on the plans but now we think we have changed our minds.
As my DIL says we will be glad of it when it’s raining & we’re fumbling for the front door key in the rain!
Three good things:
1. The opportunity to change minds,
2. We have put some bird feeders up in the garden on a tree...the birds didn’t take very long to find them....
3. The USA election is over....hope that great country gets settled & calm & moves on....
I like the idea of a porch too. Yes, I'm so glad for the USA that they have chosen Biden. I hope there's not too much trouble following the election results. Trump doesn't seem to be in the mood for conceding just yet!
@maggiemae We are having a wet room too but we call a wet room a bathroom with shower you just walk in to with all same floor level. Ideal if you are wheel chair bound...we are making ready for all eventualities!! 🤣🤣🤣 we do need somewhere to leave muddy boots though!
Lovely leaves on the road. Agree with a nice porch cover on a rainy day! Thank you for calling the U.S. a great country! Hopefully we’ll have a peaceful transition!
Interestingly, it's the thing neither we, nor our architect, thought about for our new back door on the extension we built a few years back. It will be very good for keeping you dry as you get the keys out! We still consider putting one on, but it's better to do it at the time, rather than back track.
@happypat Yes, you must think about the future, however dramatic it might seem when you are still fit and healthy! One of the issues I have with dad's situation is that he hasn't done that, wanting obstinately, but understandably, to stay in his current house - an old mill which he practically renovated single handed. He still has a coal fired rayburn though and has to bring in coal every day. It's going to be a problem, but he won't hear about it! Can you imagine - 87 and still bringing in coal from the garden - in the dark and snow during the winter. The best thing we did for our extension, by the way, was to have what we call the utility room - washing machine, sink, tumble drier, space to hang coats, and most importantly, space to take off wet and muddy boots!
@jamibann It would have been so easy to stay in our previous home.....I think there comes a point in time when you leave it too late....we have just done it in time & hope we get to spend a good few years in this new one.....we do want to be able to stay out of the nursing homes!!!
We used to have a solid fuel Rayburn so know exactly how hard work they are....dirty too.....if you let them nearly go out & then put fuel on they can suddenly ignite & whoosh smoke all over...ha ha I remember it well but still a lovely homely thing to have...all that riddling the men love it! Incidentally your dad is only four years older than Harry! That’s why it’s been good to make the decision for us!
@jamibann The utility room is something we need to alter in the plans too....us farming types need somewhere for outdoor wellies etc etc. Ours doesn’t look big enough in the plans!
.but a style you are happy with.
Yes we are getting our head round it.....might have to change the style if outside a bit so it looks right!
