A big boy. by happypat

A big boy.

I have never cooked as big a turkey in my life before & have actually bought a meat thermometer to help.

This big guy weighs 24lbs & they reckon 25 minutes to the pound...hope that's right!!!
We are going to our daughters house tomorrow but I am cooking the turkey as the Aga is on all the time. There will be fifteen of us so hopefully still enough turkey for Boxing Day.
It's a rolled & boned one which we have never tried before but am hoping it will save all the messing about with the left overs. It has the leg meat in there too as I much prefer the brown meat myself.

A big responsibility cooking this!!!!

I feel so sorry for all the people stranded & flooded this Christmas...always bad but at this time of the year it's extra heart breaking,...my thoughts with anyone affected.
It looks gorgeous I also love the brown meat of the legs -so much more juicy * tasty and I also smother my turkey with streaky bacon ! I have not tried a rolled & boned turkey and like the traditional whole bird and the "messing about" with the left-overs after !! and Alfie loves scraps of the meat !!

Delicious it looks too Pat. Ours is a tiny 10lb bird! Lovely Christmas shot.

24 lb?! Mine's like @seanoneill's - a mere baby but it's still heavy enough to lift in and out of the oven. I'm just cursing because I forgot to buy a throw away tray this year. Have a fab day tomorrow - 15 sounds like loads of fun!!

It's a big'un good luck with the cooking. I echo your thoughts about those poor people flooded out of their homes. Watching the news tonight made me feel so sad for them.

I've never seen a foil dish this big either! Good luck!

Are you sure it's 24lb!! Delia days for 20lb 45min at high temp (220C, 5hours at 170C then half an hour uncovered at 200C. For 15lb it's an hour less so for 24lb I suppose you'd want to add 50 min at 170C. 7 hours in total!!

PS Mary Berry is the Aga queen - you could google her instructions!

Meat thermometers are brilliant! Go by that! My meat is always ready ie to temperature way before the timing says

24lbs?! And if it's rolled & boned that will be all meat. How many people are you feeding?

Oh yum! The first year we were married I bought a 24 pound turkey only to find it wouldn't fit in my oven!!! My turkey is all cooked and boned, soup is on the stove, turkey divan casseroles in the fridge for tomorrow...I love turkey!!!!

@judithg Have checked online & my temperatures match yours so will put it in around 9.30 am ready to rest it for 4.30pm..just turned the Aga up a bit but will put it in the electric to get it going for 40mins.
Thanks Judith. @annemary Yes it also says stick the thermometer in to thickest part & when temp is right it's cooked....simple!! LOL !

And the bacon on top, that is a neat idea, and I bet that adds a nice taste.
