St Mary’s by the Sea is an historic 1880 fully restored non-denominational chapel situated in the heart of Port Douglas. The presbytery and church were completely destroyed by a cyclone on March 16, 1911, which left only seven out of 57 houses in the Port Douglas standing and 100 people homeless. The Chapel has a huge glass altar window which offers breathtaking views of the Coral Sea and rainforest clad mountains, stained glass windows, traditional wooden pews and a church bell. It can comfortably seat 80 guests in air-conditioned comfort, though we have accommodated up to 110 with limited standing room at the back. St Mary's by the Sea is now one of the oldest buildings in Port Douglas and is a non-denominational place of worship and for the conduct of Port Douglas weddings, christenings, memorial services and funerals.
