Pandanus Fruit......Fruit Segments....Pandanus Tree.....Pandanus Roots...
The pandanus tree (Pandanus tectorius) grows in maritime, tropical, humid & subhumid climates. The species is well adapted to exposure to strong & salt-laden winds. They are also tolerant to extended dry periods of up to 6 months & the soil quality seems to produce few negative consequences to the trees growing success. It grows well in both loam &sandy soils & can sustain periods of waterlogging, whilst thriving in free draining sandy & poor nutrient soils. Prop roots are numerous, thick & originate from the base of the trunk. Species with large and medium fruit are edible, notably the many cultivated forms of P. tectorius (P. pulposus). The fruit is eaten raw or cooked. Small-fruited pandanus may be bitter and astringent.
