Aachen Cathedral by harvey

Aachen Cathedral

The courtyard in front of our UNESCO world heritage cathedral. It was started just before the year 800 by Charlemagne or Charles the great, arguably one of the most important figures in medevial Europe.

I love how this is a hodgepodge of archetectural styles. The large pinkish stone section with the large rounded arch, that is from the original year 800 church. Slapped on the front you have a grey baroque doorway from the 1700's. To the left of that you have a very small romanesque section, probably from the 12-1400's. Ontop you have a grey neo-gothic tower from the 1800's. This was an attempt at an HDR shot for me, but I ran out of time playing around with it before its time to go watch Germany beat Spain!
I love all the different architectural styles all combined into one building. Very cool!
