When you leave, leave the curtains on the windows. It was a slogan for all those who, after the fall of communism, decided to look for happiness in life somewhere else. These curtains in abandoned houses really made a difference.
When taking this shot, I thought about converting it to monochrome, but I really liked the subdued colors and evening light and didn't change anything.
I have been interested in photography all my life and remember quite well developing my first black and white films myself... My favorite subjects are...
After reading your narrative this becomes such a poignant image. If you have time could you please explain how the curtains and slogan made a difference. Did it mean that somebody else, looking for a home, could realise that this one was abandoned? Many thanks Rob
@robz In our culture, window curtains are an important decorative element and provide privacy. The thin tulle material allows daylight into the room almost unimpeded, but still constitutes a visual barrier to views from the outside. This is changing a bit, Evangelicals do not hang curtains, but various window decorations. A window without a curtain is cold and exposed. It looks like an eye socket without an eye. At the end of the last century, many windows were empty and it was a very gloomy sight. On the other hand, window curtains protected such apartments against unauthorized residence of other persons.
I agree- I'm the first to love a black and white shot, but the muted tones in the wood just add a slight touch of warmth against the sorrow of an unoccupied home.
@haskar Ah - thanks so much for your explanation Haskar. That was all fascinating to read. Your country has such traumatic history - it is very humbling to read about. And the concept and culture behind the saying is remarkable. Thank you so much for your detailed answer. Regards Rob
