I told my older two boys recently that I thought they were old enough to wander down towards the lake on their own with their free time. The blank, blinking, baffled looks they gave me upon hearing this did not fill me with joy... (It is just SO HARD not to turn into the "when I was a kid" old lady with this next generation!!) So we dusted off our bikes and I showed them the way. We had a great trip, they actually ran into some friends (see boys, other people DO let their kids leave the driveway...) and they were amazingly unembarrassed to be seen with their Mom riding on her sweet bike with the big-butt seat and the tassels. (I'm assuming that will change - and fast!) They went off to muck about in the water with their friends and Old Bessie and I sat and just enjoyed the breeze... Not the least bit shabby. Next time they're on their own! :-)
What a great memory. Your boys will thank you one day - although now that they have that sense of independence and freedom they may not venture too far with you on Bessie for much longer - gorgeous though she is!
