We’ve been planning for ages to head to my parent’s house for the express purpose of seeing their old slides. David and Finn were especially interested because my Dad has a lot of slides from his tours serving in Vietnam back in the 60’s. We finally had an open weekend and made it there last night. My Dad had the ancient slide projector and screen all set up and ready to go - a giant box of slides by his side. He barely let us settle in and grab a drink before he flipped off the lights and started the show!! I kid you not, two and a half slides in we hear a pop and then darkness.... The lightbulb - the new lightbulb he just bought - is blown and the show is over before it begins...
For a split second, my normally undaunted father is daunted and we all sit around wondering what to do. But Dad is no quitter! He heads to the basement and eventually returns with an even OLDER piece of technology - a film projector and a handful of reels that belonged to my Grandfather - his Dad - mostly of his time in post-war Germany in the 40’s and 50’s. After a refresher in reel to reel projector functioning and a brief moment of wondering if that really hot smell was something we should worry about...the show resumed!! A different show than we planned - but a wonderful show nonetheless. Family History for the win!! 😊
