This is Seven Dials in Covent Garden. The pillar stands at the centre of a hub of seven converging roads but at its top are only six sundials. This is due to a late change in the planned layout of the roads, after the pillar had been commissioned.
The choice of seven roads was to maximise the number of houses that could be fitted into the available space. The area was a notorious slum in the 19th century but is now full of expensive boutiques and eateries.
Constructive criticism very much appreciated - keen to learn more and improve. I bought a decent camera in February 2016 and joyed this wonderful space...
Fascinating. I have been there many times but didn't know this and to my shame never noticed the mismatch. I like the creative way you have included the tree in the picture. Did you see the musical?
@helenhall Thanks Helen. I didn't notice the mismatch either but Google is a wonder thing. I didn't see the musical. Is it good? There was an interesting article in the Evening Standard this evening about Roal Dahl and his relationship with his mother - loads of letter's he'd written to her have been found.
Terrific shot and very interesting information! I would love to visit the Roald Dahl Museum. I read lots of his books with my students when I was teaching. "The BFG" is probably my favorite. :-)
