While terrible scenes play out on city streets, this guy was making the most of some rural tranquility. You can't really tell from this photo, but he's in the middle of a huge, empty field, and must have hoisted his bike up over the fence from the cycle path, and also, I think, come prepared with his book and cushion!
I spotted him as I was cycling home from a routine optician's appointment in Cambridge - not so routine it turned out, as the sight test showed after being steady at exactly the same level of short-sighteness for the last 20 years, my right eye has suddenly decided to decline by a whole point over the last six months. At the same time, a hint of long-sightedness is creeping in too - varifocals are on the horizon- luckily, I'm so short-sighted I can't see them that far away!
This is a fabulous picture of self containment.. who needs people !! I like the way he has his legs in the air !! I wonder why he was lying that way round, possibly because of the sun in his eyes ? What a contrast to the mayhem on our streets !
As my optician said, 'But you're past 40 - of course you need vartifocals'. Too much work in my opinion - you need to get out and rest those eyes more!
