Too pretty to be called Shelob :-)

We have a few cobwebs on the balcony and sometimes at night I can spot dull, grey or black little spiders. They are usually high up under the roof and disappear long before I get my camera, macro lens and flash ready.

Tonight I went out on the balcony for some fresh air and I spotted a cobweb by the railing. I saw something red in it and wondered if it was an insect that was trapped so I went to have a look and it was this beautiful spider. I had to get Claudia so she could see it - she doesn't like insects but even she had to agree that it was beautiful.

Luckily it didn't move so I had plenty of time to get my camera and macro lens ; I didn't need a flash today.

A quick google search identified this as a European garden spider https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araneus_diadematus
