The details are everything!

They just don't make buildings like this one any more. In fact, I can't say that I have ever ween a round column made of bricks before. This is the Lee County Courthouse, which dates back to 1907 when the county was first formed. The redish orange bricks were made locally from the red clay that is predominant in the area. For Architectural August.

I love old buildings. The details here are wonderful. They don't make them like they used to...

What a fantastic column- I don't think I've ever seen one made of bricks. But I'm wondering if it might not be poured cement with the bricks "carved in" as the scroll work on top is definitely a mold (you can see the seem). Great architectural collage.

@pitasmum @digitalrn Thanks!
@olivetreeann That's what I thought at first, but I'm not sure they had that technology in 1907. I think the bricks are rounded, probably made into a curved mold. Some of them stick out a little and you can see the grouting in between them. Sanford was once known as the Brick Capital of the World because they made so many bricks here. There are still a few brick factories here.

@homeschoolmom I'm pretty sure they did (even the Romans knew a bit about concrete just never used it much as they preferred the marble) but if you've seen some sticking out, then the curved mold is probably what they did.
