Purple Sunbird by ingrid01

Purple Sunbird

Huh?! Yes, this is a female Purple Sunbird. The male birds are black and in the right light you can see some purple in their neck. They look a little like humming birds and are found mainly in South and Southeast Asia but extending west into parts of the Arabian peninsula.

I was very confused when 2 different looking birds were building a nest under the lime tree. After some research it became clear that the male and female look totally different.

When they were building the nest, I was looking forward to get some photos and set up my tripod. However, the nest fell down when they were still working on it when we had high winds some time in March. I will post a photo of the nest in in my extras album today.

Oh and last but not least: yesterday's photo made the TP and PP again! Thank you all!
How beautiful. I have not seen these birds before.
