Yesterday morning a friend and I visited the fish market. After you have bought your fish, they can clean it for a small amount for you. There are many booths, all with plastic around them and a small gap.
I asked if I could take pictures. The cleaner was ok with that, so the small hole in the plastic came in very handy.
The fish is called Hamour and was very fresh and tasty.
The husband of my friend is a manager for the fish-farms in the Golf of Oman. They are both from Greece and love eating fish. So we go together to the fish market and she showed me how to check if a fish is fresh.
The first time we were also a bit shocked about the "popped-out eyes" and just to be safe we bought another fish.
But she asked her husband and he explained that these fish live quite deep in the ocean. When brought up their eyes and often tongues pop out due to the change in pressure.
I'm not a big fish eater, so I ask the fish to be cut into fillets and either pan-sear or steam it. My friend have hers just cleaned and loves to take the head and tail home too.
By the way that was another challenge... the man who sold us the fish spoke a little English. The cleaner in the photo did not speak English at all. So our instructions were passed on: fish 1 fillet - keep the head. Fish 2: clean - keep the head.
However, we had to get my fish head in my friends bag... We managed, but it must have been very interesting to watch us literally pointing that out :)
Thank you all for your comments! It even made the popular page!
