I vaguely remember chanting this little rhyme to ladybugs when I was very young but I also remembered something about telling them their house was on fire and that having something to do with their children being gone??? I always deemed it rather cruel. I mean, can you imagine, everytime you venture off somewhere, there are people telling you to fly back home because your house is on fire all while including mention of your children in the same breath??? Wrong in so many ways.
I just had to research it and found that the English word, "Ladybird" is derived from the Catholic term, "Our Lady". Apparently, the rhyme was a warning to Catholics who refused to attend Protestant services.
Okay, like THAT makes it any better.
(This little ladybug spent quite a bit of time with our family yesterday. For the most part, it was Finn who kept her company but here she is resting on Taylor's hand. And, FYI, there was no mention of anyone's house being on fire. She flew away of her own accord.)
