@stephomy gave me the following challenge: I want you to try to take a picture of something very long, but use a very narrow depth of field, so only a small portion of it is in focus.

I think your last version was more successful as it's easier to see focus on the grain than the paint. (I did one like this using droplets on a railing)

It has worked well - the little knot at the beginning catches your eye and then the beam makes your eye go backwards.
