Playing with Dry Ice

My 18 year old son wanted to buy some dry ice to do some 'experiments' ... so I thought I'd at least get some photos of his experiments. It was more difficult than I thought to capture the results. I have darkened the background slightly in this one, but it's still not brilliant. Any advice on how to capture this type of shot would be welcome!
Simply lovely.

Actually I think it's pretty cool! Way back in the day my husband worked with dry ice, it was definitely fun to mess with.

@adventuringowls Mae, it was fun despite my initial reluctance. He also put some into a plastic bottle with some hot water and stood well back to watch the bottle explode! No idea what our neighbours thought we were up to! :-)

I think you have captured it very well. It is most interesting without being spooky like in halloween. Love the color tones in the shot. It sounds like a fun day with dry ice.

Really imaginative. Oh, the possibilities! Love it. It's the young who inspire us to continue to experiment sometimes. Great idea.

This is a great shot Issi. As CO2 is denser than air, it will sink, therefore you could put your 'subjects' in a high-sided container so that the mist was constrained and formed a 'lake'. Also, try longer shutter speeds - cut the ambient light, low ISO, high F/ number - and see what gives you the effect you like.

no advice, but very cool concept and this seems to have come off beautifully! where does one find dry ice?

@northy Well, I wouldn't have known had it not been for my son, but you actually get it in the supermarket here (US)!

@jamibann really? i'm in canada and i don't believe i've ever seen it... i was toying with getting a smoke machine at one point, but that was looking like requiring a lot of effort...

@northy Yes, Kroger, you need to show ID and it's sold by weight. Interesting what you find out! You need to be careful handling it, but it's great for a bit of photographic fun!
