Killdeer by jamibann

Killdeer

I spotted this guy whilst hanging around at the golf club yesterday afternoon waiting on hubby. I had to google him to find out what type of plover he was. An interesting name, I thought!
Great capture, Issi. Nice bird with those stripes on the neck.

Great pose. There were probably eggs on the ground nearby too.

@anazad511 Thanks Ana, I've never noticed this type of bird before, but I am usually looking up, not down! @genealogygenie You're probably right, Kim, he/she was certainly looking very vigilant!

@darylo Yes, I had to search for the type of bird, although I guessed some sort of plover. Strange name though!

@mtpagano Thanks Michelle - a new bird to add to my collection of photographed Texas birds! :-)

love the killdeer. Beautiful bird but never heard of them

Wonderful pic, Issi! Love the muted earth tones (which are the killdeer's favorites too). I have these in abundance around my home; their plaintive call is often heard early morning or late evening.

These are real fun to watch - they'll play injured and try to get you to follow them away from their nest when they have babies - can walk awfully fast when they want to. Very nice shot of him.

Lee
What a curiously large eye it seem to have. Good shot Issi.

@ch1ppy_m1nton I'm afraid this was the only birdie I shot on the golf course that day! @gamelee He does have a very large eye Lee, right enough! @almondjoy1 @lyndemc @milaniet @ziggy77 @busylady @tristansmum Thanks for the lovely comments folks - I was happy to capture a different type of bird, for a change!

Well done. So many details. Don't they have a call that sounds like their name? ("kill deer")
May 18th, 2014
@randystreat That's possible Kathy - I haven't actually heard it's call. I'll need to listen out!

He is really rather handsome

I've never heard of one of these, he is very striking with those dark rings around his neck.

Fantastic -- you've gotten such a clear view of him. We have these on Beaver Island and you've made me excited to look for one this summer when I get there.

Great shot!! I've seen these do the "broken wing" act too! So cool!

Great shot! they love building their nest in driveways and near puddles. when surveying, I wrapped survey tape around a stake and put it near them to alert people of their presense! very well shot!
