Barges on the Seine by jamibann

Barges on the Seine

The Seine is a 482 mile long river and an important commercial waterway in France. It is dredged and slow flowing, making it easily navigable. It rises near Dijon in the north east and flows into the English Channel at Le Havre. It is navigable by ocean-going vessels as far as Rouen; 75 miles from the sea and over 60 percent of its length, as far as Burgundy, is negotiable by commercial riverboats. Almost the entire river is available for recreational boating. In our area of the Parisian suburbs, we see lots of barges, transporting merchandise of all sorts. I think this photo, taken on Sunday, is carrying a load of anthracite. Better viewed on black, if you have the inclination or the time!

The barge looks rather long and is very low in the water so I presume it was fully loaded.

That looks huge, reminds me of the barges we used to see on the Rhein close to our house in Germany.

The reflections in the water really shine when viewed on black. Your commentaries are like a geography/history lesson... with pictures!

It's a beautiful composition, but also fascinating to read about. This is one long barge!

I love viewing the Barges here also on Lake Erie!! Much different as the lake can become quite treacherous. Wonderful capture!!

Lovely reflections and soft autumn feeling. Interesting info about the Seine, too.
