The Seine is a 482 mile long river and an important commercial waterway in France. It is dredged and slow flowing, making it easily navigable. It rises near Dijon in the north east and flows into the English Channel at Le Havre. It is navigable by ocean-going vessels as far as Rouen; 75 miles from the sea and over 60 percent of its length, as far as Burgundy, is negotiable by commercial riverboats. Almost the entire river is available for recreational boating. In our area of the Parisian suburbs, we see lots of barges, transporting merchandise of all sorts. I think this photo, taken on Sunday, is carrying a load of anthracite. Better viewed on black, if you have the inclination or the time!
